Olympic heroes de-throne USA to go top of world rankings

Germany's Olympic Gold medalists have knocked USA off the top of the FIFA Women's World Rankings. The reigning European Champions, coached by Steffi Jones, move into first place with 2108, with the USA taking their place in second. The US side, which has been top of the rankings since March 2015, have 2105 points to their name. France complete the top three with 2072 points.

The crucial factor in the switch at the top of the table was both side's performance at the SheBelieves Cup. Jones' team beat England (1-0), drew with France (0-0) and lost to USA (1-0) as they secured a second-place finish behind the French. But despite beating Germany, the hosts suffered defeat against the other two nations and finished fourth in the tournament. The victory for France leaves them just 36 points behind Germany, meaning the gap between the top three is as close as it has been since December 2004.

The next FIFA Women's World Rankings will be released on 23rd June 2017.
