Ajax name young side, United wear black armbands

The team from the Netherlands named the youngest ever starting XI for a final in the history of the competition with an average age of 22 years and 282 days. It’s now 22 years since Ajax last won a European trophy. Given the European pedigree of the two clubs, however, this match was rightly touted as a ‘battle of the giants’ in the run up to the final. There was a minute's silence before the match to remember yesterday’s terror attack in Manchester which killed 22 people and injured many more. The Manchester United players wore black armbands.

United began the game well in front of 46,961 spectators in the Friends Arena in Stockholm. The first chance fell to Pogba after just 24 seconds. United did take the lead after 18 minutes and it certainly wasn’t undeserved, even if there was an element of fortune in Pogba’s strike which deflected off an Ajax defender and looped past a helpless goalkeeper. United were missing Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic through injury.

Ajax grew into the game and defended well, although Younes’ team offered little in attack. Despite enjoying more possession, Ajax’s only real chance of the first half fell to Bertrand Traore after a quarter of an hour.

Ex-Dortmund man Mkhitaryan scores

Not long after the start of the second half United extended their lead as the former Dortmund player, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, flicked the ball past Ajax keeper Andre Onana.

Ajax continued to test Manchester United, but were lacking an end product on too many occasions in the final third. Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard both had chances to finish the game off for United who were ultimately deserved winners on the night.
