Meier fires Frankfurt to shock victory

Eintracht Frankfurt secured a shock 1-0 home victory over FC Schalke 04 on Bundesliga matchday 1. Borussia Dortmund started the 54th Bundesliga campaign with a 2-1 home win against FSV Mainz 05. 1. FC Köln and VfL Wolfsburg got off to winning starts, claiming 2-0 victories each against Darmstadt 98 and FC Augsburg respectively. Hamburger SV missed out on a victory, conceding a late 1-1 equaliser at home against FC Ingolstadt.

Frankfurt enjoyed the better start in their game with Schalke and created several early chances. Alexander Meier left Schalke keeper Ralf Fährmann without a chance after 13 minutes, firing Frankfurt into the lead. Meier then had his penalty in the second half saved by Fährmann, but the hosts held onto their advantage and celebrated the three points.

Thunderstorm delays Köln match

Dortmund controlled the pace in front of 81,360 spectators inside the Signal Iduna-Park and took the lead through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's header in the first half, assisted by world champion André Schürrle. Aubameyang doubled Dortmund's lead in the second half from the spot after Schürrle had been brought down, before Yashinori Muto grabbed a late consolation goal for Mainz.

The stadium in Cologne was also a sell-out, with the home side were eager to assert their dominance over Darmstadt right from the start, as Marcel Risse found the back of the net for Köln after just eleven minutes. Referee Patrick Ittrich was forced to delay the game half for 13 minutes in the second due to a threat of thunderstorms. Immediately after the game resumed Anthony Modeste struck Köln's second goal after an assist from Artjoms Rudnevs.

New signings on target for Hamburg and Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg earned their first three points of the season in Augsburg, as new signing Daniel Didavi struck the opener after 35 minutes. Ricardo Rodriguez scored a direct free kick in the closing stages to give Wolfsburg a 2-0 away win.

Hamburg were on course for a home victory, after new signing Bobby Wood had opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Ingolstadt struggled to create clear chances for large spells of the game, but equalised in the 79th minute when Cleber's attempted clearance teed up Ingolstadt's Lukas Hinterseer.
