Löw: “My head and heart said yes”

DFB president Reinhard Grindel and DFB general secetary Dr. Friedrich Curtius announced in a press conference in Frankfurt today that Germany national team coach Joachim Löw has extended his contract until 2020.

Joachim Löw on…

… the contract extension: When your head and heart say yes then the decision is made easier. I thank Reinhard Grindel, general secretary Friedrich Curtius, the whole DFB headquarters and the league for their support and confidence to extend my contract. I’d also like to thank Oliver Bierhoff, Andreas Köpke, Thomas Schneider and Marcus Sorg, as well as the whole team behind the scenes. Our work together is characterised by great trust. We want to continue on from our success in Brazil at the World Cup in Russia. Developing a team and the players and leading them at the highest level motivates me as much as winning titles. Currently, the only thing which counts for us is qualifying for the World Cup in Russia as group winners.

... contract talks: Questions about a contract extension have been asked quite a lot recently but since the summer, I’ve known that the president has faith in me. Normally, these talks are held after a successful qualification campaign but this time I found that after the Euros was a good time for them. It's about continuing the long-term goals and visions that we have.

... speculation about a return to club football: That’s far in the future. Of course I can imagine myself training a club team again, I don’t find it particularly hectic or stressful in club football as I love working with a team on the pitch. However, I’m very clearly focused on the DFB as I’ve seen that the tournaments are an absolute highlight – games against Brazil or Argentina stand above all others. These tournaments are unique and special, it’s an unbelievable motivation to look ahead to the next one. I enjoy it because the DFB have faith in me.

Reinhard Grindel on…

… Löw’s contract extension: I have always stressed that I don’t think there is any better manager for Germany than Jogi Löw. He has shaped and continued to develop the team in the past few years with his passion and technical expertise, and led us to winning the World Cup. He is showing how determined and motivated he is to defend our title in Russia in 2018. It was up to both sides to plan everything properly and to concentrate on addressing all football-related challenges without speculation getting in the way. We are delighted that we will be able to continue our excellent work towards the World Cup together and that Jogi Löw will be in charge of the national team until 2020.

Dr. Friedrich Curtius on…

… Talking to Löw: Our conversations were characterised by a mutual respect and trust between each other, just as they always have been throughout the years. Jogi Löw is an ideal person to be the Germany manager with his in-depth knowledge of the game and his presence on the sidelines. Oliver Bierhoff’s and Marcus Sorg’s contracts will run until 2020 and we will now be speaking with Andreas Köpke and Thomas Schneider. We are very happy that we have secured this continuity in the leadership of the national team.
