Leipzig defeat Augsburg to break record

Newly-promoted RB Leipzig are continuing to write headlines in the Bundesliga. Under the tutelage of Ralph Hasenhüttl, the unbeaten side deservedly won 2-1 at home to FC Augsburg on Friday evening to set a new record. No other club that is new to the top flight has remained unbeaten in its first six games since 1. FC Köln did the same in the very first Bundesliga season in 1963.

What’s more, the result saw RB Leipzig climb to third in the table, for 19 hours at least. The impressive Emil Forsberg scored the 500th goal in the club’s short history in the 11th minute, before Dong-Won Ji equalised for the visitors just three minutes later with a stunning curled effort. Yussuf Poulsen provided the winner early in the second half.

Forsberg the man of the hour

Leipzig head coch Ralph Hasenhüttl made five changes to the line-up that drew 1-1 with Köln last weekend. Among them were Poulsen and Timo Werner, who led the line for the hosts, but Forsberg was the standout player in the early stages of the game. The Sweden international was involved in almost all of his side’s attacks, and scored the opening goal himself, although Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz will not relish looking back on the goal.

The setback did not seem to shock Augsburg into life, even though they managed to quickly draw level. Without their leading marksman Raúl Bobadilla, who was ruled out with a shoulder injury, the visitors seemed to be retreating further and further into their own half. They could have been punished for that on several occasions, not least when Werner headed against the crossbar and saw a later shot saved by Hitz.

In the second half, the newly-promoted side ramped up the level of pressure once again. Four minutes after Marcel Sabitzer had missed a good opportunity to make it 2-1, Poulsen made no mistake, lashing it into the roof of the net. Leipzig then looked to build on their lead and settle the game, but they rushed their counterattacks too often or could not find the right finish.
