Kuntz calls up Tah, Sané and eight Olympic silver medallists

DFB coach Stefan Kuntz has named his squad for the upcoming European Champions qualification matches against Russia on 7th October in Ingolstadt and against Austria on 11th October in St. Pölten. The 23-man collective includes Bayern 04 Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah, 1899 Hoffenheim’s Nikas Süle and Manchester City’s Leroy Sané, all of whom previously featured in the senior national squad.

“The U21 have big ambitions of its own and it is important for the senior team that it functions well,” said DFB sporting director Hansi Flick. “The head coach and Stefan Kuntz are in close contact regarding the situations of individual players and make their decisions based on what they think will be the best path for the players’ development. Therefore, there will continue to be rotations. “This cooperation is to be continue in the coming months with a view to the 2017 Confederations Cup and the 2017 U21 European Championships in Poland.”

Kuntz: “The U21 squad prepares players for the top level”

For Stefan Kuntz, the deep pool of players is testament to the level of outstanding young talent in Germany. “When you look at the experience we have in the squad, both in the Bundesliga and internationally, it is absolutely amazing. The players know that the U21 setup aids their development and prepares them for the highest levels,” said Kuntz today.

1. FC Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck has been given his first call-up to the U21 squad. On the new addition, Kuntz said “I know Julian Pollersbeck very well from my time in Kaiserslautern. He has made great strides since then, especially in the past few months, and he deserves his call up to the U21 national team.” On the games themselves, he continued “against Russia we want to have the perfect qualifier. We are close to achieving our aim and we want to do everything to ensure that we do it.”
