Kroos: "I never would have dreamt of this"

World champion Toni Kroos secured his place in the history books by winning his second Champions League title Saturday. "I would never have dreamed of this. I think it's something very big," said Kroos, who is expected to join the national team in Ascona at the start of next week. Following Real Madrid's European final victory over city rivals Atlético, Kroos answered questions from the media.

Question: Toni Kroos, how does it feel to have won the Champions League for a second time?

Kroos: Emotionally I'm still quite calm, as I’m known to have been in the past. But it's something very, very special to have won the Champions League for a second time - with two different clubs. I would never have dreamed of this. I think it’s a very big deal.

Question: What happened in Real Madrid's changing rooms after the final?

Kroos: I'm sure you will have an idea of what happened. The game was extremely important for us. It was our last chance to win a title - the biggest title of the season. We had an up and down season, so it's amazing that we accomplished this win.

Question: You were taken off with 20 minutes left to play, are you injured?

Kroos: No, I don't have any issues. I think that I played a good game. The coach simply wanted to bring on someone fresh in order to secure our lead until the final whistle, which unfortunately didn’t work out. A goal is always possible. But the guys that were still on the pitch fought hard until the end and did everything for this victory.

Question: After the final whistle a lot of the Real players brought their families out onto the pitch, where was your son?

Kroos: Sleeping at home as he should be! I think he is still a bit too young for that. And my wife is quite far in her pregnancy - so it wouldn't have been a good idea.

Question: To what extent is your coach Zinedine Zidane responsible for the title?

Kroos: I think it's noticeable that our entire game has improved enormously since January. He brought in new ideas and after our inconsistent phase, we found stability. We had a very, very good Champions League campaign.
