Khedira’s Juve win in Porto; Leicester still in with a chance

Sami Khedira’s Juventus have put themselves firmly in the driving seat in their Champions League round of 16 tie with Porto, after a 2-0 win at the Estádio do Dragão. The visitors dominated the game, as World Champion Khedira played in a two in midfield alongside Miralem Pjanic. The hosts went down to ten men in the first half, and Max Allegri’s men controlled proceedings thereon after.

Alex Telles received his first yellow card in the 25th minute, and was sent off just two minutes later for a second bookable offence. However, the Old Lady didn’t take advantage of the man advantage straight away, with their first goal coming from substitute Marko Pjaca with just 18 minutes remaining – his first goal for the Bianconeri. Another substitute, Dani Alves, netted a second just two minutes later, so the Turin-based club take a two-goal advantage into the second leg, which they will of course play at home.

Leicester still in with a chance despite loss

In the other Champions League game of the night, Premier League champions Leicester City faced Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. Despite losing 2-1 on the night, Claudio Ranieri’s men will still feel they’re in with a chance with qualifying for the next round.

Juan Correa could have put his side 1-0 up earlier than they did, as his penalty was saved by Kasper Schmeichel in the 14th minute. However, the hosts did take the lead through a Pablo Sarabia header within ten minutes of this miss (25’). In the second half, Correa got revenge for the saved spot kick, dispatching the ball past Schmeichel in the 62nd minute. Jamie Vardy’s strike in the 73rd minute has however given Leicester hope of qualifying for the quarterfinals, but the tie could look very different, had Schmeichel not parried Vitolo’s header late on, or if Adil Rami’s header onto the bar were a couple of inched lower (89').
