HSV off the bottom, Frankfurt held by Augsburg

Hamburger SV secured a very important 2-0 victory at SV Darmstadt 98 on matchday 13 in the Bundesliga and no longer sit bottom of the standings, with FC Ingolstadt now occupying 18th place. In the other Sunday game, Eintracht Frankfurt claimed only their second away-point of the season with a 1-1 draw at FC Augsburg.

HSV fans have waited more than 200 days for a Bundesliga victory, but Michael Gregoritsch and Matthias Ostrzolek were on target in Darmstadt to hand them their first win of the campaign. Coach Markus Gisdol’s side were able to continue their upward trend shown in recent weeks, as they are now unbeaten in their last three games. Darmstadt, on the other hand, suffered their fifth consecutive defeat.

Hectic start, but HSV prevail

The opening stages of the game inside the Jonathan-Heimes-Stadion were very hectic, with plenty of misplaced passes and niggling fouls. Consequently, a set piece was required to provide the visitors with the chance for the opener, as Gregoritsch found the back of the net with a header from a Filip Kostic cross.

The pace of the game continued in similar fashion after the break, as Darmstadt struggled to create pressure and opportunities. With just a few minutes left to play, Ostrzolek secured the victory for Hamburg.

Frankfurt miss out on third place

Eintracht Frankfurt, unbeaten in their last eight games, failed to pick up a fourth straight win due to an inconsistent performance in Augsburg. The draw also means Frankfurt missed out on claiming third place in the standings.

The visitors put in a strong performance in the opening 30 minutes and took the lead via Branimir Hrgota. Augsburg had made a number of mistakes but still managed to get back on level terms before the break, when Dong-Won Ji’s long-range shot found the back of the net. The match now appeared to sway in Augsburg’s favour, but while both teams were presented with opportunities to secure all three points, there was nothing to separate them when the final whistle blew.
