Hertha edge out Freiburg, Leipzig earn draw in Hoffenheim

The 2016/17 Bundesliga newcomers SC Freiburg and RB Leipzig started their seasons with a defeat and a draw respectively. Last season's second-division champions Freiburg suffered a 2-1 loss away to Hertha BSC, while Leipzig were able to snatch a point from 1899 Hoffenheim, drawing 2-2.

The game between Hertha and Freiburg ended in dramatic fashion. Freiburg's Nicolas Höfler had levelled the scores in added time but substitute Julian Schieber went on to regain the lead for the hosts in the dying seconds. Vladimir Darida had opened the scoring for Hertha shortly after the hour mark.

"I was really happy for Julian Schieber as he finally scored his goal. We should have added to our lead after the opener. We are all very glad it worked out in the end," said Hertha coach Pal Dardai after the game.

RB Leipzig started "Project Bundesliga" with a positive result, as they fought hard to earn a 2-2 draw at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Lukas Rupp had put the hosts in front ten minutes into the second half, before Leipzig skipper Dominik Kaiser bagged the equaliser just 173 seconds later.

Mark Uth was on target for Hoffenheim in the 83rd minute, but Marcel Sabitzer's late strike saw Leipzig snatch a dramatic point. TSG remain without a Sunday victory since December 2014.
