Gwinn: "Scoring the first goal at the World Cup was special"

Giulia Gwinn became scored the first goal of the tournament at the U17 World Cup in Jordan in Germany's 2-1 victory over Venezuela and was crowned "Player of the Match". The 17-year-old Freiburg midfielder spoke with DFB.de about Germany's successful start to the tournament and how she is looking ahead to the team’s second group game against Canada on Monday.

DFB.de: Giulia Gwinn, how happy are you with how you’ve started the tournament?

Giulia Gwinn: We are very satisfied, both with the result and with the performance. Venezuela were very aggressive and played attacking football. But we embraced that and came out on top.

DFB.de: What was the key to success in this encounter?

Gwinn: We put up a fight right from the start and tried to win every ball. As a result we created a lot of attacking situations and took an early lead.

DFB.de: What did scoring the opening goal mean to you personally?

Gwinn: Scoring the first goal at the World Cup is definitely something special. Apart from a penalty at the EURO's in Belarus, I hadn't scored a goal at a major tournament. Being able to celebrate the win together with your teammates afterwards make it even better.

DFB.de: What will you take from this match into your next game against Canada?

Gwinn: Getting the victory and the three points will definitely give us a lot of self-confidence. We can go into our next game with our heads held high.

DFB.de: Which areas of your game still need improvement before Monday?

Gwinn: We need to be more clinical with our chances. But overall we’re pleased and want to build on our performance against Venezuela in our second group game.
