Gladbach record opening day win against Leverkusen

Borussia Mönchengladbach won the first Saturday evening kick-off of the new Bundesliga season against Bayer Leverkusen with a scoreline of 2-1. The West German rivals played out an even game and both had chances to open the scoring. Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno was in great form in the first half, first denying Raffael and Oscar Wendt in the 21st minute with a double save and then tipping André Hahn’s effort round the post two minutes before half time. Hahn made no mistake just three minutes later though after he found himself in behind the Leverkusen backline and finished low past Leno. For Leverkusen, their best chances of the first half came in the 33rd minute with a strike from Karim Bellarabi and Jonathan Tah, who hit the bar with a header in the 40th minute.

After the break, Leverkusen went on the search for the equaliser straight away. In the 50th minute, Kevin Kampl hit the post - it was the second time in the game that the guests hit the woodwork. The hosts luck deserted them however in the 80th minute. Gladbach’s centre-back Andreas Christensen unintentionally blocked a strike from Bellarabi, whose header across the six yard box set up Joel Pohjanpalo to nod in from close range. Leverkusen’s joy was short lived however as Gladbach took the lead again five minutes later. Substitute Thorgan Hazard sent captain Lars Stindl through on goal who slid the ball under the out-rushing Leno.
