Germany vs. Spain Champions League showdown

Bayern are out for revenge, two world champions go head to head in Dortmund while Marc-André ter Stegen’s return to Borussia-Park will be emotional. DFB.de gives an overview of the Germany internationals who’ll be in action in the Champions League and Europa League this week.

The Champions League will throw up the biggest challenges for the German teams, as Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach will come up against the three best teams in Spain in Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Bayern’s reunion with Atletico

DFB players Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Joshua Kimmich, Jérôme Boateng and Mats Hummels will face Atletico Madrid on Wednesday (20.45). Last season, Bayern lost 1-0 in Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final which ultimately contributed to Bayern’s elimination of the competition.

André Schürrle, Mario Götze, Julian Weigl and Matthias Ginter face last season’s Champions League winners Real Madrid tonight at 20:45 CEST with Borussia Dortmund. Toni Kroos will be playing for Real Madrid in the Signal Iduna Park in the Group F clash. Marc-André ter Stegen will face his former club Borussia Mönchengladbach with FC Barcelona on Wednesday at 20:45 CEST.

DFB players in action

Bernd Leno and Julian Brandt face AS Monaco at home with Bayer Leverkusen tonight. AS Monaco have won their last seven games in all competitions and beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in their first Champions League group game of this season.

Mesut Özil and Schkodran Mustafi will face Switzerland side FC Basel at home after beating Chelsea FC this weekend in the London derby. Leroy Sané and Ilkay Gündogan will face Celtic on Wednesday with Manchester City, whilst Sami Khedira will play away at Dinamo Zagreb with Juventus. Ron-Robert Zieler recently signed for last season’s Premier League champions Leicester City and will face FC Porto at home.

Two wins in two for Schalke?

There will also be two national team players in action in the Europa League. Max Meyer and Benedikt Höwedes have the chance to notch their second win in the Europa League this Thursday against Austrian champions RB Leipzig.

However, AS Roma will have to do without central defender Antonio Rüdiger, in their fixture against FC Astra Giurgiu. The Germany international is still sidelined through a cruciate ligament rupture. Mainz will also play their second Europa League group game, when they travel to Azerbaijan to play against Gabala FC on Thursday.
