Slovakia and Hungary have been announced as Germany’s final friendly opponents before the team head to their Evian-les-Bains base camp for the 2016 European Championship on 7th June. In cooperation with the free-to-air television stations in Germany, the DFB has also scheduled family-friendly kick-off times for the two matches. The charity game against Slovakia in Augsburg on Sunday, 29th May will begin at 17:45 CEST, while Die Mannschaft will take on Hungary in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday, 4th June at 18:00 CEST.
“Our plans ahead of the European Championship are now complete,” said Dr. Reinhard Rauball, 1st vice president of the DFB. “We’re delighted not only to have provided beneficial circumstances for Joachim Löw’s team with these early kick-offs, but also for the fans. With the games starting early in the evening, we wanted to outline how important it is for us to have families, children and young adults coming to the stadium.”
“The charity match doesn’t just take place at a family-friendly time, but it will also help support many non-profit projects, as the proceeds will go to the DFB’s and Football League’s foundations,” said 1st vice president Dr. Rainer Koch.
Bierhoff: “Give kids the chance to see it live”
“Die Mannschaft has long wanted to play a game in the late afternoon or early evening, in order to give kids and young adults the chance to see it live at the stadium,” explained Germany national team general manager Oliver Bierhoff. “It’s even nicer that we’ve been able to make that happen for our final two games before the EUROs. Over the next weeks and months, we at the DFB are looking forward to putting an exciting array of activities together to take place in and around the stadiums.”
DFB general secretary Helmut Sandrock praised Germany’s free-to-air television stations for their cooperation: “We’re very grateful to ARD and ZDF for not only going along with our wishes to have earlier kick-off times, but also for wanting to help us in making these two games true footballing feasts.”
