Germany miss out on semi-final spot

The Germany U19s have failed to reach the semi-finals of the U19 European championship in Slovakia after losing 4-2 to Switzerland - their second defeat in two group games. In the third and final group game on Monday (kick-off 18:00 CEST) against Austria there will be nothing at stake, due to Switzerland and Spain (who beat Austria 4-0) both having secured their places in the semi-finals with six points.

"At the end of the day, it has to be said that Switzerland deserved to win the game," admitted manager Maren Meinert. "You couldn’t wish for a better start to the game with such an early goal to go into the lead. We weren’t as good on the ball as Switzerland, and we have to ask questions as to why not. We may have created chances, but we didn’t use them. The Swiss were much better in that department," Meinert continued: "Now we have to regroup. Our road to the World Cup finals goes on, we need to think about what needs changing."

Goals from Sanders and Freigang not enough

Stefanie Sanders provided the Germany Women’s youth team with the perfect start in Senica, giving them a 1-0 lead inside three minutes. Celebrations did not last long, as Naomi Mégroz of Switzerland scored the equaliser just three minutes later. For the remainder of the half, Jasmin Sehan and Sanders had a number of big chances to re-establish the German lead - Sanders struck the post in the 44th minute.

The Swiss proved themselves more efficient and took the lead in the 64th minute through Camille Surdez. Germany immediately began to press for the equaliser, but Sanders was denied at the end of the following attack. Not long after, Germany did find an equaliser courtesy of half-time substitute Laura Freigang. But again, the Swiss responded quickly and went back in front just two minutes later, again through Surdez. The game was put to bed in stoppage time by Cinzia Zehnder’s goal making it 4-2.
