Germany face Italy in the quarter final – title-holders Spain are out

Germany will play Italy in the quarter final of EURO 2016 on Saturday (21:00 CEST, live on ARD and Fan-Club-Radio). In the rematch of the 2012 final, the Italians progressed from the round of 16 with a 2-0 win over title-holders Spain. Giorgio Chiellini made it 1:0 for the Squadra Azzura in the 33rd minute, and with Spain throwing everything forward in the final stages, Graziano Pelle killed the game off in added time.

Germany were last defeated by Italy during EURO 2012 (2-1), and also in the semi final of the home World Cup in 2006 (2-0 after extra time). The DFB team are still waiting for their first victory over Italy in a major tournament, but during their last encounter in a friendly on 29th March this year, they won comfortably 4-1. "Italy versus Germany. I shudder to think – it will be extremely difficult", said Italy manager Antonio Conte: "We will need to perform better than tonight, otherwise we will not beat Germany."
