Freiburg on the path to Europe, Werner scores in Schalke draw

Bayer Leverkusen’s hopes of European football next season have been all but buried, while SC Freiburg’s Europa League dream is still very much intact. The promoted side won 2-1 against Leverkusen in the Bundesliga’s first Sunday game and therefore move up to sixth place in the table. Bayer currently have just a four point cushion above the relegation play-off spot.

The game was played out in front of 24,000 spectators at the sold-out Schwarzwaldstadion, including Germany national team coach Joachim Löw. Olympic silver medal winner Nils Petersen put the hosts into the lead in the 11th minute with his ninth goal of the season, before Germany forward Kevin Volland converted a penalty to draw the visitors level (60’). Volland was originally fouled by Aleksandar Ignjovski inside the box and brushed himself off to take the spot kick himself. In the dying embers of the match, substitute Pascal Stenzel bagged a winner for Freiburg (88’). He ran down the right wing and finished, leaving Leno with no chance.

Werner scores in 1-1 draw with Schalke

RB Leipzig passed up the chance to close the gap between them and FC Bayern München to six points, whilst Schalke are now six points away from both sixth place and the relegation play-off spot. The second placed side faced the Royal Blues in the Veltnis Arena before a crowd of 60,916 fans.

Despite their go-ahead goal given to them by Germany international Timo Werner, had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw on Matchday 30’s last game. Werner scored with his first touch of the ball in the 14th minute, with a header that beat Fährmann with ease. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar then equalised for the home team almost instantly after the second-half kicked off, with a header of his own.
