First competitive meeting between Union Berlin and Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund and Union Berlin face each other for the first time in a competitive fixture on Wednesday evening at 20.45 CEST in the second round of the DFB Cup. However, most of the players recognise each other from the friendly between the two sides that took place in January this year. Borussia Dortmund won the friendly 3-1. The visit of Borussia Dortmund will be a highlight of the season for Union Berlin. “We are not at the same level,” said Union Berlin manager Jens Keller. “I would have liked to play a more similar opponent in the second round.”

Keller faced Dortmund five times as Schalke manager, winning two, drawing once and losing twice. That is maybe the only statistic that gives Union a bit of hope. Berlin have only won one of six DFB Cup ties with Bundesliga teams, that was against Bochum in the 2000/01 season. In comparison, Dortmund have won all of their last ten cup ties against 2.Bundesliga teams. They have also won ten of the last DFB Cup home fixtures.

Dortmund are yet to find their consistent form this season. They put on great performances in the 6-0 win over Legia Warschau and the 5-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg. However, they have also lost 1-0 to RB Leipzig, 2-0 to Bayer Leverkusen and drew 3-3 with FC Ingolstadt last Saturday. Union Berlin are playing well as of late and are dreaming of achieving promotion. Union Berlin have won six of their last seven matches. “Anything is possible in a DFB Cup match. We will go there to try and cause an upset.”
