DFB agrees to termination of Flick’s contract

The DFB have agreed with sporting director Hansi Flick’s wish to terminate his contract early. His current deal was due to expire in 2019. Flick had previously held conversations with DFB-President Reinhard Grindel and general secretary Dr. Friedrich Curtis about wanting to take a career break following ten intensive years working with the DFB. That time included a period as assistant coach to Joachim Löw and since September 2014 as sporting director. The DFB regret this personal decision taken by Flick, but respect his wish.

The search for a successor, whose responsibilities involve providing the link between the Germany national team and the youth set-up, will be confirmed at this year’s extraordinary DFB conference in September. Horst Hrubesch will take over the role in the interim period. Hrubesch has the ideal qualifications for the job given his wealth of experience in the youth set-up and he is also well respected by the whole of the DFB coaching coaching staff.

Grindel: “It is with a heavy heart that we let him go”

DFB-Präsident Reinhard Grindel had this to say: “Over the course of his ten years with the DFB, Hansi Flick has given great service to German football. Alongside Joachim Löw, he made a huge contribution to the 2014 World Cup triumph and as sporting director, he has laid some important foundations for the future. He is well recognised both within the DFB and the league for his technical capabilities and his human qualities. It is with a heavy heart that we let him go, but we respect his wish.”

Hansi Flick went on to explain his decision himself: “I am very grateful to the DFB for their understanding and good will. I leave with ten great years behind me. It was an exciting, successful, but also intensive period. I threw myself into each and every task with complete commitment. That applied not only for the World Cup in 2014 but also for my work as sporting director, which I was able to leave a mark on. In the last few years, we have established a philosophy, put together an excellent coaching team and laid the foundations for a successful future with our work in the youth set-up. My decision was not to do with the sporting ambitions of the DFB, nor do I, or did I, have any problems. The decision is simply a personal wish on my part, as I want to be able to concentrate more time with my family.”

Hrubesch: “Hansi has done some fantastic work”

The DFB will take all the necessary time to come to a decision on Flick’s successor. General secretary Dr. Friedrich Curtis said: “We will now look to produce the profile of candidates we are after and in close coordination with the league, find a successor. The new appointment will be confirmed at the DFB conference in September. We are delighted that Horst Hrubesch has taken over the role in the interim period. He has a superb reputation and knows the youth set-up better than anyone else in the DFB.”

Hrubesch added: “Hansi Flick has done fantastic work for the DFB in the last few years. Preparing the U21 side for the European Championships and the first team for the Confederations Cup are important tasks for in the upcoming weeks and months. I will also be focusing on what will hopefully be a successful European Championships for our U19 side in Georgia and the U20 World Cup in South Korea.”
