Demirbay: "My goal lifted our game"

World Champions Germany are through to the Confed Cup semi-final in Russia after a 3-1 victory over Cameroon. Joachim Löw’s side will now face Mexico on Thursday (20:00 CEST). DFB.de caught up with the manager and several players after the full-time whistle.

KEREM DEMIRBAY: We struggled to get into the game and find our spaces. My goal lifted our game. Afterwards, we were very dominant and raised our game. I’m delighted to have made my starting debut today.

JOACHIM LÖW: Both myself and the team have to look at and understand our first-half performance. Our opponents always had the chance to challenge. After the break, things went differently. We were in complete control of the game. I reminded the team at half-time about what our strengths had been in the two previous games. There was lots of free space in the first half, which we failed to exploit. It’s extraordinary to have reached the semi-final with this young team. For me, it was important to give all players some time out on the pitch. Amin Younes looked lively on the left and I was pleased with Benjamin Henrichs’ performance too. We have decided that Marc-André ter Stegen will be in goal for the rest of the competition.

Normally statistics are neither here nor there. But 100 wins and also my 150th international in charge is brilliant. Over these games, there have been many brilliant moments but also some tears. I have to thank my players for this.

JULIAN DRAXLER: It was necessary that we upped our performance level in the second half. We spoke about a few elements of our game that we needed to change at half-time. Scoring at the start of the second half helped us. We now have an extra day’s break, which will be invaluable ahead of the semi-final.

TIMO WERNER: We planned to play better after the break than in the first half. The early goal and the red card helped. We simply had the desire and determination to win the game. I was delighted to score my first two goals. Everyone has seen that we’re a good team and are capable of challenging.

MARVIN PLATTENHARDT: We struggled in the first half because we conceded possession far too often. After the break, we fought back, created lots of goalscoring opportunities and deservedly won in the end. Now we have to recover quickly. Mexico are an aggressive side so we must be well prepared.
