Champions FC Bayern open against Leverkusen

Defending Bundesliga champions Bayern München open the 55th Bundesliga season against Bayer Leverkusen on August 18th. The Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) revealed the 2017/18 Bundesliga schedule on Thursday.

The game between Carlo Ancelotti’s men and newly-appointed Heiko Herrlich’s XI will take kick off at 20:30 CEST. The defending champions will be at home, as is tradition, and the last time the Munich outfit dropped points in a season opener was in 2008, when they drew 2-2 against HSV.

Matchday 1: Rhine derby

Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Köln will meet in a derby for their first games of the season. Borussia Dortmund travel to visit VfL Wolfsburg. Runners-up RB Leipzig have to play guest to Schalke 04.

The 2. Bundesliga begins before the Supercup between DFB-Pokal winners Borussia Dortmund and Bundesliga winners Bayern (August 5th), with the first matchup of the second-tier being a game between former Bundesliga side VfL Bochum and FC St. Pauli on July 28th (20:30 CEST).

BVB vs. Bayern on Matchday 11

The first Clásico of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season between BVB and FC Bayern will be played on Matchday 11 (3rd-5th November) in Dortmund. The defending champions go into the clash having played RB Leipzig the week before.

Due to the World Cup in Russia, the winter break will only last from December 17th until January 12th, meaning that the season can end somewhat earlier, with the final day of the campaign falling on May 12th. Teams will also only have to play two mid-week Bundesliga fixtures. The 2. Bundesliga finishes a day after the top-tier season has concluded, whilst the relegation play-off between sides from the two leagues is scheduled for May 17th and 21st 2018. The relegation play-off between the second-tier and third-tier takes place one day after each fixture.
