Bayern suffer Champions League setback in Madrid

Bayern München suffered a setback in their second Champions League match of the season. Carlo Ancelotti’s men fell to a 1-0 defeat away to Atlético Madrid, with the only goal coming from Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco in the 35th minutes. Antoine Griezmann had the opportunity to double the Spanish side’s lead late on, but struck his penalty against the crossbar.

Jérôme Boateng was preferred to Mats Hummels in central defence for the visitors, but Boateng and defensive partner Javi Martinez were given a very tough test by Atlético’s two-pronged attack of Griezmann and Fernando Torres. The result was a repeat of last season’s semi-final first leg, when Bayern were also kept at bay by a team Ancelotti declared “defensively the best in Europe”.

Borussia give Barca a scare, but fall short

Despite a very positive performance, Borussia Mönchengladbach were unable to spring a surprise against FC Barcelona, eventually succumbing 2-1 despite taking a first-half lead. Borussia have now lost both of their opening two games in this season’s group stage, as their former goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen was able to celebrate a win on his return to the club.

Thorgan Hazard scored his seventh goal in his last ten games to get the Foals dreaming of an upset, but their illustrious visitors ultimately overcame them in the second half. Substitute Arda Turan equalised for the Spanish champions, before Gerard Pique profited from an error by Borussia goalkeeper Yann Sommer to score the winning goal.
