0-0 in Frankfurt as Hoffenheim remain unbeaten

1899 Hoffenheim maintained their unbeaten run in this clash between two of this season’s surprise teams and remain on course to finish in a European spot with two weeks to go until the winter break. TSG could not be beaten once again as they stubbornly held Eintracht Frankfurt, equal with them on points, on matchday 14 of the Bundesliga as both teams now have 26 points.

Frankfurt were not able to get the result they wanted in the battle for the Champions League qualification places, one day after their head coach Niko Kovac extended his contract. However both teams can be satisfied with their performances in front of around 42,000 fans. Hoffenheim have not lost in the Bundesliga now for almost seven months, while Frankfurt remain unbeaten at home since April 2016.

Meier with the opening chance in intense game

The match quickly developed into an intense battle amid freezing temperatures. Both teams tried to halt the other’s build-up play and made the pitch narrow. It was Eintracht who created the first good opportunity after a quarter of an hour or so, but captain Alexander Meier’s effort from ten metres out after a ball into the box from Haris Seferovic went straight into the arms of Oliver Baumann.

Hoffenheim, who were forced to do without Germany international Sebastian Rudy at the last minute due to a bruised rib, were tough to break down and gave a good account of themselves. Niklas Süle headed over the Eintracht net in the 18th minute from a Nadiem Amiri corner. Baumann was in the spotlight for positive reasons once again in what was a hotly-contested match, when he saved well from an Omar Mascarell strike.

U21 international Toljan hits side-netting

The away side began to dominate more and more towards the end of the first half but Jeremy Toljan could only find the side-netting on the half-hour mark. Meier tested Baumann at the other end with a dangerous bouncing shot.

Both teams picked up the pace after the break as they sought to try and find a winner. Nagelsmann then tried again to strengthen his side up front with the introduction of Mark Uth. Yet chances were few and far between in the second half, although the intensity remained high. Substitute Ante Rebic provided some danger for Frankfurt and just missed with an effort after 70 minutes.

Tempers flared as the match went on, with the referee brandishing eight yellow cards in the second half. And after a scuffle broke out in the 85th minute, Frankfurt’s Chandler was given his marching orders for an incident with TSG’s Wagner.
