Zorniger named new VfB Stuttgart manager

One day after their saviour Huub Stevens announced his departure, VfB Stuttgart have confirmed that Alexander Zorniger will be the club’s new head coach. The Bundesliga survivors have appointed the 47-year-old as they enter a re-building phase, after flirting with relegation to the second division this season.

“We’re delighted to have brought Alexander Zorniger on board as the new manager,” said VfB sporting director Robin Dutt. “We have concept in mind for the club and his playing style is very similar to that. We want to rediscover our identity.”

Zorniger’s previous managerial post was at 2. Bundesliga team RB Leipzig, who he led to back-to-back promotions, but they fell short of an immediate climb to the top flight. “I’m very much looking forward to the challenge here at VfB Stuttgart,” said the new coach. “I’m convinced that we can develop and build something here. It’s very special to be the manager of this club in my home region.”
