World Champion Zieler to leave Hannover

World Cup winner Ron-Robert Zieler will leave relegated side Hannover 96 at the end of the season. The Germany goalkeeper revealed the news on his Facebook page on Tuesday. “I don’t want to mislead the fans or beat about the bush, but rather be honest,” said Zieler.

He said that the club will always have a special place in his heart, but his aim is to continue playing top-flight football next season. “Some offers have come in, but I haven’t made a decision yet.” Zieler has been with the Lower Saxony outfit since 2010, and currently holds the club record for 173 consecutive Bundesliga appearances. Due to a clause in his contract, originally set to run until 2017, the goalkeeper can leave Hannover in the summer for a fee of €3.5 million due to their relegation.

He has expressed his hope that Hannover can bounce back next term. “I feel that a club like 96 belongs in the Bundesliga, no ifs or buts,” he wrote on Facebook. “I hope that it’s just a short stopover in the second division.”
