World Champion Toni Kroos scores in Real Madrid win

World Cup winner Toni Kroos and Cristiano Ronaldo helped take Real Madrid back to the top of the Primera Division table. Between them, the Germany international and the World Footballer of the Year had a hand in four of Real’s goals in a 5-1 win over Rayo Vallecano. Sami Khedira was not in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the match. Last season’s Champions League winners are now four points clear of archrivals FC Barcelona.

“Kroos played exceptionally. He was the best player on the pitch,” praised Real boss Ancelotti. “He scored his first goal today and really surprised me because he put in an unbelievable performance.”

The home side in the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu came flying out of the blocks, with Kroos using space on the left flank to deliver a perfect ball into the centre for Gareth Bale, who had the easy job of putting Real 1-0 up inside nine minutes. Sergio Ramos doubled their advantage shortly before half time, before Alberto Bueno’s goal gave the visitors some hope during the interval.

Real were a dominant force in the second half though. Ten minutes after the restart, Ronaldo found Toni Kroos, who lined up a shot from around 20 yards and brilliantly picked out the bottom corner. Ronaldo was the provider again four minutes later, setting up Karim Benzema’s gal to make it 4-1. The final goal was provided by the Portuguese superstar himself shortly before full time.

Emre Can fires Liverpool in front

Germany U21 international Emre Can scored his first goal in the English Premier League on Saturday. He put Liverpool 1-0 in front in their crunch match with Chelsea, but it wasn’t enough for the win, or even a point. Jose Mourinho’s side came from behind to win 2-1 courtesy of goals from Gary Cahill and Diego Costa.

André Schürrle was not in the Chelsea squad two days after his 24th birthday. The DFB-Team winger is yet to play 90 minutes for the Blues this season. While Chelsea remain clear at the top of the Premier League table, Liverpool have dropped to mid-table and are in danger of losing pace with the Champions League places.
