Wolfsburg miss out on the title

VfL Wolfsburg’s Champions League dreams were dashed in cruel fashion on Thursday night in Italy. The game, which took place in Reggio Emilia, ended 1-1 after 120 minutes but French champions Olympique Lyon held their nerve, winning the shootout 4-3.

Elise Bussaglia, who joined the Wolves from Lyon in 2015, missed VfL’s fifth penalty. Saki Kumagai then fired past Germany keeper Almuth Schult to wrap up the triumph. Nilla Fischer was also denied from the spot. The defeat means that Wolfsburg miss out on the chance to lift their third title, having previously won the competition in both 2013 and 2014.

Bremer creates the opener

Lyon hit the front after just 12 minutes. Germany star Pauline Bremer’s classy pass found Ada Hegerberg, who made no mistake. The equaliser came in the 88th minute, thanks to Alexandra Popp. Before that point the Wolves rarely threatened.

VfL end the season with some silverware though, having lifted the DFB Cup for the third time on Saturday in Cologne. The players will celebrate that achievement in Wolfsburg’s town hall on Friday afternoon.
