Werder Bremen win in battle at the bottom

Werder Bremen were the victors in the clash at the bottom of the Bundesliga. leapfrogged Borussia Dortmund with a 2-1 home success and the victory means that BVB will be in a direct relegation place over the winter break, or even bottom should SC Freiburg win tomorrow. Augsburg were the big winners at the top of the table in Saturday’s Bundesliga action as they ran out 2-1 winners at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach to draw level on points with Gladbach themselves and FC Schalke 04 in 4th and 5th places respectively with a four-point gap now opening up between themselves in the last European spot and seventh position. Leverkusen shared the spoils with Eintracht Frankfurt while Stuttgart vs. Paderborn and Schalke vs. Hamburger SV both finished goalless.

Augsburg come from behind to win

FCA went behind against Gladbach after just two minutes when the referee blew for a penalty following a handball in the box. Max Kruse duly converted from the spot but the visitors’ lead lasted just 18 minutes when Markus Feulner levelled proceedings. Raul Bobadilla then struck for Augsburg just after the break to clinch victory and draw level on points with the Foals. Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who are now just one point ahead of both teams from that game, left it late to snatch a point at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. Alex Meier converted from the spot just before half time for the Eagles but Germany U21 international Karim Bellarabi pounced in the final ten minutes to give Bayer 04 a point. That point sees Leverkusen remain in third spot, while Eintracht move above 1899 TSG Hoffenheim and Hannover 96, who are both to play tomorrow.

Dortmund in relegation places over winter break

In the big game down at the bottom of the German top flight, it was Werder Bremen who came out on top and can really enjoy the winter break. Davie Selke opened the scoring after just three minutes to inflict misery on Jürgen Klopp’s side, with Fins Bartels doubling SVW’s advantage on the hour mark with a neat finish. Borussia reduced the arrears with 20 minutes left to play when World Cup Winner Mats Hummels headed home and Ilkay Gündogan cross. BVB were unable to find an equaliser though and now sit in 17th and will be bottom of the Bundesliga over Christmas should SC Freiburg win tomorrow. VfB Stuttgart and SC Paderborn played out a goalless draw in a match that never really got going at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. It was the same scoreline in Gelsenkirchen, where neither Schalke nor Hamburger SV could break the deadlock.

VfL Wolfsburg also left it late in the 'top game' timeslot on Saturday evening in the Bundesliga against 1. FC Koln. The Billy Goats got off to the perfect start when Dominic Maroh got on the end of a searching cross to hand his side an early 1-0 lead. However, the man of the hour, Bas Dost was there to cancel out Maroh's opener and 1-1 was the way that it stayed for a good hour. That was until Naldo popped up again with a bullet header to hand Wolfsburg a much needed win ten minutes from time.
