Under-20s win to keep World Cup progression hopes alive

Germany’s under-20s have given themselves a chance of reaching the last 16 of the World Cup in South Korea after a 3-2 win over Vanuatu. Guido Streichsbier’s side finish the group in third on goal difference after Mexico lost 1-0 to Venezuela in the other final group fixture.

The top two from each group progress along with the four best third placed teams, and with four points it means the DFB side have a strong chance of qualifying to the knockout stages.

Malcolm Badu got Germany’s first goal of the tournament, opening the scoring just before the half hour mark and when Fabian Reese and Emmanuel Iyoha made the lead three, ‘Die Mannschaft’ looked on course for a big, comfortable victory.

But the small Island nation fought back, and despite having already been knocked out pushed forward in the final half an hour, and scored two goals through Bong Kalo.

Germany must now wait on the results of results from the other five groups before having their place in the next round confirmed.
