U20s lose 2-1 to Switzerland

Germany U20s lost the final match of this batch of internationals 2-1. Guido Streichsbier’s side were hoping for back-to-back victories over the Swiss as they continue to prepare for this year’s U20 World Cup in South Korea. Germany finish the mini-tournament in second place behind Poland. Arianit Ferati scored Germany’s only goal of the game in the 79th minute. Joao Oliveira had putt Switzerland 2-0 in front thanks to his goals in the 16th and 63rd minutes.

Germany beat the same opponent last Thursday 1-0 thanks to Fabian Reese’s goal. Trainer Streichsbier now has until the 31st March to name his preliminary 35 man squad for the World Cup. He must then submit his final squad ten days prior to the start of the tournament.

Streichsbier: "We lacked freshness"

"We weren’t good enough today, we lacked freshness,“ said Streichsbier after the match. “When we had the ball we were too static and were too easy to play against. The Swiss were well prepared for us.”

Streichsbier made six changes to his line-up from the game in Elversberg. Nikolai Rehnen started in goal. Gino Fechner, Ohis Felix Uduokhai and Jordan Torunarigha were given opportunities in defence and Emmanuel Iyoha began in place of Reese upfront.

Oliveira strikes twice, Ferati scores free-kick

Striker Joao Oliveira of FC Luzern took the limelight in front of 654 spectators in the Tissot Arena. He put the Swiss into the lead in the 16th minute. In a fast-paced game, the Germans controlled large parts of the match, but found it difficult to conjure anything against a fast, counter-attacking Swiss outfit.

After the interval, Iyoha received a square pass in a central position and in space, but his shot just went over the bar in the 58th minute. The Swiss were decisive in their passing whenever they won the ball and this was the case when they scored their second. Nicolas Hunziger played in Oliveira who netted his second from the left-hand-side. The Germans kept going and were rewarded with a goal in the 79th minute when midfielder Arianit Ferati of Fortuna Düsseldorf sent a free-kick into the top right corner of the goal. However, it proved only to be a consolation for the young Germans.
