U20s in goalless draw against Mexico

The Germany U20 national team missed the chance to gain a first victory at the World Cup in South Korea. Guido Streichsbier’s side could not make the breakthrough against a stubborn Mexico defence despite having far more possession. The team sits in third place in the group after suffering a 2-0 defeat in their opening fixture against Venezuela on Friday.

The DFB XI got off to a positive start and put the Mexicans under pressure, forcing them to lose the ball time and again. However the Germans struggled to create anything dangerous as it was the Central Americans who had the first real opportunity, forcing keeper Svend Brodersen into a save after just 13 minutes. Mexico gradually began to assert their authority as they began to move out of their own half and open up the game.

Serdar and Reese unable to find opening goal

Germany’s dominance was clear to see but they could not transfer that momentum into scoring goals. Amara Conde forced his way into the box but his low ball in missed Suat Serdar by centimetres. Fabian Reese then picked up the ball shortly afterwards following a defensive error from Mexico but his effort from twelve metres out went over. Dominik Schad, who had come on for Matthias Bader early on, also came close with an effort just after the half hour mark.

However the Mexicans did not roll over and Edson Alverez met the ball with his head excellently, only to be denied by some superb goalkeeping from Brodersen. The game was hanging in the balance and Maximilian Mittelstädt found himself free in front of the Mexico goal with 38 minutes gone but was stopped in his tracks before he could get a shot away.

Ochs has best chance

Germany started the second half as they ended the first, dominating and looking threatening. Conde let fly from 20 metres out but saw his effort fly over the Bar. Serdar and Reese also had a go but failed to test keeper Abraham Romero. It could have been worse for the DFB XI after Brodersen failed to deal with a cross but Benedikt Gimber got back to clear off the line.

The match began to fizzle out as both sides neutralized each other in midfield, struggling to create any opportunities of real meaning. It finished goalless in a result that will satisfy neither team.
