U20s beat Switzerland, U18s lose to France

The Germany U20 side played their penultimate game before the World Cup in South Korea (20th May – 11th June) this evening. Guido Streichsbier’s side beat their Swiss counterparts 1-0 in front of 3385 spectators in Elversberg. On Monday (18:00 CET), the U20s are in action again against the Swiss. Then Streichsbier will have to finalise his squad for the tournament in Asia. An initial 35 man squad must be named by the 31st March and then ten days before the tournament, the final squad must be announced.

“Passion was important and that was there for all to see. The boys did really well and fought hard. We didn’t concede and there were many positives,” said Streichsbier."

After a goalless first-half, Fabian Reese struck the winner in the 64th minute and earned his side a 1-0 victory. The 19-year-old from Karlsruher SC scored after some good interplay with substitute Justin Möbius (VfL Wolfsburg) and rewarded the Germans for their strong second-half display.

Switzerland were, as expected, tough opponents from the outset. Germany had more of the play, but the Swiss defended skilfully and didn’t allow the Germans time and space. Philipp Ochs of Hoffenheim was unlucky not to score when his free-kick hit the bar.

U18S JUST LOSE OUT TO FRANCE

The U18 Germany team lost the first of two international matches against France 2-1. Vitus Scheithauer (1. FSV Mainz 05) pulled one back for Meikel Schönweitz’s team in the 66th minute in Chauny, but it wasn’t enough for the U18s. They meet France again on Sunday (16:00 CET) in Laon.

Elie Youan struck early for the French, putting them 1-0 ahead inside two minutes and they were 2-0 up after an hour. The Germans refused to give in, however, and after pulling a goal back, had good chances to equalise. It remained 2-1, however, and thus meant the German U18s suffered their first defeat this season.

Despite the loss, Schönweitz was pleased with what he saw. “It was an intense and open game, played at a high-level. France played with quality from the start and capitalized on our first mistake when they took the lead. We needed 20 minutes and a change of system before we got into the game, then we played with quality and a good mentality and created a lot of chances, one of which we converted in the second-half,” said the head coach. “Unfortunately we couldn’t get the result to match our performance, however, I’m definitely pleased with the way in which we worked and played after a stutter start.”
