U17s head to EUROS as group winners

The German U17s will go to this year’s U17 European Chapionship in Croatia as group winners. In the final game of Group 1, Christian Wück’s team beat Turkey 3-1. After comfortable wins against Armenia (10-1) and Finland (6-2), the Germans finished the qualification stage with nine points and a goal ratio of 19-4 and will head to Croatia with a lot of confidence. Turkey finished second on six points, then came Finland on three and Armenia on zero.

Captain Jann-Fiete Arp of Hamburg was the match winner in Side, despite missing a penalty in the 37th minute. The 17-year.old put his side 1-0 up in the 14th minute and doubled the lead just after half-time. Yunus Akgün pulled one back for Turkey in the 53rd minute and this made for an exciting end to the game, but the Germans were solid at the back and continued to show ambition in attack.

RB Leipzig‘s Elias Abouchabaka scored a 74th minute penalty and in doing so notched his fifth goal of the tournament. Turkey ended the match with nine men after Egehan Gök was sent off for the foul that led to the second penalty. Abdussamed Karnuçu had already received his second yellow after just half and hour.

The draw for the group stages of the European Championship will take place on the 3rd April. The U17s will be in pot one for the tournament draw along with six other group winners and hosts Croatia. A total of 16 teams will contest the tournament proper; this includes Turkey as one of the seven best second placed sides from the eight qualifying groups.
