Ter Stegen wins UEFA Save of the Season

Champions League winner beats World Cup winner: Germany U21s goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who won the treble with FC Barcelona last season pipped Bayern München keeper Manuel Neuer to the UEFA Save of the Season award, ahead of Thursday evening’s Best Player in Europe ceremony in Monte Carlo.

The 23-year-old former Borussia Mönchengladbach keeper’s save against Robert Lewandowski in last season’s semi-final against Bayern München showed off the ter Stegen’s excellent ability: not only did he react brilliantly to save the Pole’s initial shot from close range, but he then scrambled backwards to clear the ball off the line and keep out the goal. The save received 28 percent of the votes online, whilst Neuer’s double save in the group-stage match against AS Roma received 20 percent of the 66,240 votes.
