Ter Stegen and Barcelona go top

Germany international Marc-André ter Stegen and FC Barcelona claimed a 2-1 victory at last season’s Champions League finalist Atlético Madrid. A late strike by Lionel Messi ensured three points for the Catalans, who now sit at the top the standings, with Real Madrid yet to play this weekend.

Barcelona have 54 points to their name and lead the standings by two points ahead of their arch-rivals, who still have two games in hand however. Real and Germany international Toni Kroos will face Villarreal on the road later on Sunday.

Barca’s Rafinha Alcantara, brother of FC Bayern’s Thiago Alcantara, scored the opener in Madrid midway through the second half. Diego Godin was able to level the score just six minutes later, but Argentine international Lionel Messi scored late to secure three points for ter Stegen’s side.
