Stuttgart and Hannover survive, HSV have to wait

SC Paderborn and SC Freiburg have been relegated from the Bundesliga automatically after an engrossing day of action in the top-flight. Hannover beat Freiburg 2-1; Stuttgart beat SCP by the same score. Hamuberg SV finished in the relegation play-off place thanks to a 2-0 victory over Schalke 04. Despite losing 2-1 to Hoffenheim, Hertha BSC will play in the top-tier next season.

Borussia Dortmund secured a Europa League spot thanks to a 3-2 victory over Werder Bremen. VfL Wolfsburg ended the season with a 2-2 draw against Köln, Augsburg came out on top against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-1), Frankfurt beat Leverkusen 2-1 and Bayern München kick started their title celebrations with a 2-0 win over 1. FSV Mainz 05.

Paderborn let their lead slip

Paderborn took the lead after just four minutes through Marc Vucinovic. The early goal put them on course for survival, however, an equaliser from VfB’s Daniel Didavi (36’) and Daniel Ginczek’s winner (72’) turned things on their head. SCP return to the second division after just one season in the Bundesliga.

There was also an early goal in Hannover. Hiroshi Kiyotake’s diving header put the hosts in front after three minutes and they never looked back. An own goal by Freiburg’s Pavel Krmas put the Reds one step closer to safety and although Nils Petersen got one back for the visitors in injury time, they fail to beat the drop.

Olic fires HSV to safety

It took HSV 49 minutes to hit the front in front of 57,000 spectators in the Imtech Arena. Ivica Olic powerfully volleyed home to send the majority of the spectators into ecstasy. Slobodan Rajkovic doubled the lead just under ten minutes later. The northern club aren’t safe yet – they will take part in the upcoming relegation play-off.

Anthony Modeste gave Hoffenheim the lead after eight minutes in Sinsheim. The club from the capital levelled through Roy Beerens (72’) but Roberto Firmino grabbed a winner for the hosts with just 10 left on the clock.

BVB reach Europe, Augsburg finish fifth

Jürgen Klopp’s farewell went to plan. A quickfire double from Shinji Kagawa (15’) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (17’) put BVB in front, however, Levin Öztunali got one back for Werder soon after (26’). Henrikh Mkhitaryan restored Dortmund’s two-goal advantage and although Theodor Gebre Selassie netted late on (85’), Klopp’s men hung onto victory.

Raffael put Gladbach in front after 36 minute but a stunning second half from the visitors saw them claim a 3-1 victory and climb to fifth. Havard Nordtveit was sent off shortly after the hour mark. Goals from Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg (72’) and Tim Matavz (77’) added insult to injury for Favre’s men. Sascha Mölders put the icing on the cake in injury time which ensured that his side qualify automatically for the Europa League group stage. Gladbach had already sealed their Champions League spot.

Bayern end the season on a high

FC Bayern capped their season off with a convincing victory over Mainz in the Munich. Robert Lewandowski’s penalty put them in front after 26 minutes. Bastian Schweinsteiger put the icing on the cake with a goal just moments into the second half.

Wolfsburg fell behind in Köln after just three minutes thanks to Yuya Osako’s goal but quickly turned things around through Luiz Gustavo (8’) and Ivan Perisic (15’). The hosts levelled shortly after the hour mark through Slawomir Peszko.

Frankfurt ended the season with a home victory over Leverkusen. Eintracht striker Alexander Meier was also crowned Bundesliga top scorer, having netted 19 times this season. Haris Seferovic put them in front after four minutes but Karim Bellarabi equalised soon after. Alexander Madlung grabbed the winner with six minutes to play in the first half.
