Stindl stars as Gladbach complete stunning comeback

Borussia Mönchengladbach mostly have their brilliant captain Lars Stindl to thank as they reached the Europa League last 16 on Thursday night. The midfielder scored a first career hat-trick in the space of just eleven minutes to turn a 2-0 deficit into a lead, before Andreas Christensen wrapped up the 4-2 win with a header five minutes later. The tie finished 4-3 to the Foals on aggregate, having lost the first leg 1-0 despite also dominating proceedings.

A second-half performance to remember means Dieter Hecking’s side can look forward to watching the Europa League round-of-16 draw on Friday from 13:00 CET. There are a number of attractive opponents in the hat, including fellow German side FC Schalke 04, Bastian Schweinsteiger’s Manchester United and Antonio Rüdiger’s AS Roma. The defender was sent off for the Italians as they lost 1-0 to Villarreal, but the capital club had already won the first leg 4-0.
