St. Pauli land surprise victory in Kaiserslautern

1. FC Kaiserslautern have suffered a big blow to their promotion ambitions, losing 2-0 at home to relegation candidate FC St. Pauli, who in turn have left the relegation zone and currently find themselves in 15th place, with a one point lead over Aue in 16th. Kaiserslautern are still second, but are in danger of falling out of the direct promotion spot when Karlsruher SC take on SV Darmstadt 98 on Monday.

Unbeaten at home going into the match, Kaiserslautern dominated the opening stages of the match but lacked creativity in the final third. St. Pauli also struggled to create chances and it was goalless at the break. 45,035 spectators in the Fritz-Walter Stadium were stunned when St. Pauli got off to a perfect start in the second 45, with Jan-Philipp Kalla and Marcel Halstenberg giving the visitors a 2-0 just ten minutes after the restart. Kaiserslautern attempted to recover and put the St. Pauli defence under lots of pressure in the second half, but lacked the clinical touch as the visitors secured a surprising but extremely vital victory.

Bottom side Aue make up ground

FC Erzgebirge Aue were also able to improve their position in the relegation battle, recording a 2-1 victory on the road against Union Berlin. This follows on from their impressive 3-1 victory against Karlsruher SC last weekend. Six points from their last two games have seen Aue climb into the relegation play-off spot.

Stefan Mugosa scored the opener midway through the first half, giving Aue a deserved lead after a dominant start to the game. Clemens Fandrich doubled their advantage shortly after the hour mark, before Martin Kobylanski was able to pull one back shortly after.
