Schweinsteiger: "I was really touched"

World Champion Bastian Schweinsteiger made his comeback during FC Bayern München’s 4-0 win over TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday. FCB coach Pep Guardiola brought the DFB-Team captain on in the 77th minute, replacing Mario Götze.

Following the game, the 30-year-old spoke about his injury spell and his return to action.

Question: Mr. Schweinsteiger, what was being subbed on in the 77th minute like for you?

Bastian Schweinsteiger: I was really touched to be welcomed like that by the spectators. It was nice to be back on the pitch, but of course it was even nicer to win the game.

Question: What was going through your head when the entire stadium got to their feet when you were brought on?

Schweinsteiger: That every training session over the last months during my injury was worthwhile. The process wasn’t easy, but now I’m happy to be back in the squad and to have got a few minutes under my belt. Hopefully it will go on like that.

Question: Did your teammate Sebastian Rode thank you for your assist?

Schweinsteiger: He doesn’t need to. Basti is a great guy and he deserved his goal. He’s someone who trains really well and has great character, so it was nice that I could set him up. I’m really pleased for him.

Question: How are you in terms of fitness?

Schweinsteiger: Obviously I’m not quite where I want to be. I haven’t had too many training sessions with the team. Like I said, I’m just happy to be back in the squad for now and to have been granted some game time. I have to try and go 100 percent in one or two weeks of training. After that, I will keep improving.

Question: Did you ever have doubts about your return while you were injured?

Schweinsteiger: No, I always believed. I knew I had to accept the injury as it was. Obviously one or two people made more of it, but we always knew the situation. You need to have patience though and the club gave me that. That made it easier me for to deal with it. Again, I’m just happy that I’m okay.

Question: Had it been the plan since mid-October that this would be the game you’d make your return in?

Schweinsteiger: Yes. I’d hoped it would be the case. Of course you have to wait and see how the knee reacts to the training sessions. I was able to train well with the team in the last two weeks during the international break. Now I hope I can continue like that.
