Schürrle: "Working hard to improve"

André Schürrle was back in VfL Wolfsburg’s starting XI for the match against FC Augsburg (0-0) on Sunday. The World Cup winner had his say in the Mixed Zone after the game, and DFB.de have summarized his most important points.

Question: Mr Schürrle, how was it being back in the starting side, after two good recent appearances from the bench?

André Schürrle: Very normal. It wasn’t a new experience for me.

Question: Were you pleased with the game in general?

Schürrle: We struggled to get into the game in the first half. Max had a big chance, and I think the game would have been a lot better had that gone in. We made it difficult for ourselves, especially up front. We were 100% there in terms of desire and effort. The first 20, 30 minutes of the second half were good, and we should have made use of our chances. At the end of the day, you have to say it was a fair result.

Question: How was the week just gone, after you provided two assists against Bremen and both goals against CSKA Moscow?

Schürrle: Very good, but it’s nothing I haven’t experienced before. I know that I am capable of deciding games, and that I can score goals. I have to keep working hard on myself, as I have been doing in recent weeks, We hope it continues like this, and we need to win games.

Question: Why did you not want to speak after your two goals against Moscow?

Question: Why did you not want to speak after your two goals against Moscow?

Schürrle: It had nothing to do with any criticism I’ve received. I just wanted to concentrate on my football, and not have to give interviews all the time. That will be the case in the coming weeks too, I don’t want to do everything and will look to give myself a break now and again. I want to concentrate on the important things, and that’s playing football.

Question: Does it do you good taking a step back from these things?

Schürrle: I have done that before in the past. It’s nothing new for me. It is an exception for me to do this. Of course, it’s our duty as professionals to talk about these things, but I think I have to make sure I answer the questions out on the pitch. I want to make sure I do this, that’s the most important thing for me at the moment.

Question: Do you think media duties have any effect on your performance on the pitch?

Schürrle: No, not really. But if you are following a goal, and want to continue to improve, then it does you good to switch off now and again.
