Saskia Bartusiak set to earn 100th cap

This Tuesday’s game (21.00 CEST) will be a special one for Germany’s captain Saskia Bartusiak for many reasons, not least because it is the semi-final of the Olympic Games. The 33-year-old will have great reason to celebrate when the women’s Olympic team sing the national anthem shortly before kick-off as she wins her 100th cap.

Bartusiak made her debut for the National side In April 2007. In her words, things have flown by since then. Shortly after making her debut Bartusiak was selected for the World Cup squad in China, where Germany won the title. The centre-back was also present in 2009 for the side’s European Championship win in Finland. Appearances in the 2011 World Cup in Germany and the 2015 World cup in Canada followed, as well as another European Championship win in 2013. Following the 2015 World Cup head coach Silvia Neid appointed Bartusiak captain of the side, after Nadine Angerer’s decision to retire.

22 Players in the 100 Club

Saskia Bartusiak is now Germany’s 22nd women’s footballer to have reached 100 appearances. Birgit Prinz remains right at the top of that list with 214 caps ahead of Kerstin Stegemann (191 caps) and Ariane Hingst (174). Silvia Neid, Steffi Jones and Celia Sasic all made 111 appearances in their respective careers. Bartusiak, however, still has a long way to go.

After Beijing 2008 she is currently competing in her second Olympic Games. The central defender has so far played every minute of the campaign, scoring the decisive equaliser against Australia in the second group game of the tournament. The national team will be counting on their captain this week as they go in search of a medal.
