Reus: “Chances against Bayern are 50-50”

Loud music comes from the Borussia Dortmund dressing room. The joy of the Dortmund players is clear to see after the 3-2 win against Gladbach on Saturday. Marco Reus was also relieved. The 27-year-old had given his side the lead from the spot, though the Germany international was more pleased with his team’s climb to third in the table and the momentum they will now take into this Wednesday’s DFB-Pokal semi-final against FC Bayern. Reus spoke to us about the victory in Gladbach, the mood at the club and the semi-final in Munich.

Question: Dortmund won 3-2 in Gladbach. Was it hard to get going again after the last few weeks?

Reus: Definitely, without a doubt. After the English week and everything else that has happened it was hard to get going in Gladbach who are very good at home and a very good team. Particularly after going behind as well we showed just how much character and morale we can show.

Question: The mood is pretty upbeat – you can hear the music coming from the changing room.

Reus: We are just happy to have won another game, because Hoffenheim have dropped points and we really want that third place. Today’s win was important.

Question:How hard will it be to hold on to third place in the coming weeks?

Reus:We’ll have to see. We first have the tough Pokal game against Bayern and then two big home games against Köln and Hoffenheim. That’s where the race for third place will be settled, I think.

Question: Can you explain how you manage to make such strong recoveries from your injuries time and time again?

Reus: Essentially, I just work hard during the time that I am injured, so I don’t need long at all to get back to 100%. There’s no doubt my successful penalty contributed towards my good start, but I’m sure that I haven’t played my best game yet. The 90 minutes in Monaco were exhausting, but it was important for me to play against Gladbach nonetheless, and I was happy to have helped out the team in that game.

Question: What do you think your chances are in the DFB-Pokal semi-final? Are you at an advantage due to a few of Bayern’s players being injured?

Reus: No, Sokratis is potentially out for us as well. Nuri Sahin just suffered a bad injury, which is tough news to take because he’s been playing well and is an important part of our game. We have to simply see how the coming days play out and who’s available to us. We’re in the semi-final because we want to be in the final, it doesn’t matter who our opponents are. It’s simply a game, in which we want to achieve something.

Question: Bayern have just one win in their last six games. Does their recent poor form give you a better chance?

Reus: What do you mean by poor form? If you know the quality that Bayern have, then you know how difficult it’ll be. We’ve built up some confidence following the win in Gladbach, but it will be a different game against Bayern. We have to show our strengths and play to them – then anything is possible.

Question: How much of a role does Dortmund’s 4-1 loss in the Bundesliga in München that came a few weeks back play?

Reus: We’ll see. Bayern were blatantly the better side in that game, but we know that the Pokal has its own special magic about it. We won two years ago in a semi-final too. It’s 50/50 as to who progresses come Wednesday.
