Referees prepared for second half of the season

Herbert Fandel drew a positive conclusion from the referee’s training camp in Mallorca. The head of the DFB referee committee sees Germany’s officials as well prepared for the second half of the season. The referees and their assistants put in demanding work, tough training and plenty of discussion and analysis during the six days in Mallorca.

"The preparations were intense, the atmosphere was labelled as full of respect and appreciation. The mood is great, the team is completely intact. A very good relationship among one another is clear to see,” said Fandel in Mallorca. Thorsten Kinhöfer spoke on behalf of the referees: "We’ve had really terrific conditions here in Mallorca. The personnel were very welcoming, the facilities were simply magnificent – should that be in the hotel itself or the sporting facilities.

The referees were split into three groups in Mallorca, which dealt with issues such as ‘discipline control’, ‘penalty area situations & handball’, ‘tactics – controlling the game – game management’. “In this preparation, it was particularly about identifying game scenarios with comparable features to further optimise the basis for a unified rulebook,” Lutz Michael Fröhlich, head of the department for referees for DFB described the aim of the training camp.

The days in Mallorca began early and ended late for the referees. Every day started at 7:45 for training with Heinz-Dieter Antretter, the referee’s fitness coach for DFB, and were concluded at 19:30 with a daily test, in which ten game situations had to be interpreted and a decision taken. They were also various seminars in Mallorca on the program in Mallorca, with themes from offside and interpreting tackles.

After the hard work in Mallorca, there was one thing confirmed: The referees are ready for the second half of the season. With all their emotions. With all decisions. Tempers will be flared in the battle for the European places and all the more in the relegation scrap. But Fandel remains optimistic that the referees can rise to the challenge. “One of the strengths of the German referees is also that they balance our the emotional cases and can cope with it,” he said. His wishes for the second half of the season? “Calmness and acceptance.”
