Özil and Mertesacker lift Community Shield

Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker were part of the Arsenal side that lifted the first title of the new English football season. Both World Cup winners started as Arsenal (FA Cup winners) faced Chelsea (Premier League winners) in the Community Shield. Arsenal won the game, which was hosted at Wembley, 1-0.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s screamer (24’) gave Arsène Wenger his first victory over José Mourinho, with their rivalry being focused on in the build-up to today’s match. Oxlade-Chamberlain cut in from the right before unleashing a powerful effort into the top left hand corner. Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois was left with no chance. Former Chelsea keeper Petr Cech, who was making his competitive debut for new club Arsenal, kept a clean sheet.

Per Mertesacker was in imperious form at the back for Arsenal and made sure that the league champions were restricted to occasional efforts. Özil was solid but not spectacular and was brought off shortly before full time. Moments later, the Gunners players and fans were celebrating Community Shield success.
