Northern Ireland beat Norway, Czech Republic win in San Marino

Northern Ireland remained second behind Germany in Group C of their World Cup qualifying group after winning 2-0 at home against Norway. They remain five points behind defending champions Germany, however.

Michael O'Neill’s team maintained their two point lead over the Czech Republic in the table, who themselves recorded an emphatic 6-0 victory against San Marino. Jamie Ward put Northern Ireland into the lead in the second minute and Conor Washington extended the lead before the break.

Antonin Barak (17’ and 24’), Vladimir Darida (19’ and 77’ pen.) of Hertha Berlin, Gebre Selassie (26’) of Bremen and Michal Krmencik (43’) scored the goals for the Czech Republic, who are undefeated since their 3-0 loss to Germany in October last year. The eight best second placed sides will enter the play-offs and fight for four remaining World Cup places.
