Neuer's first trip to the Eternal City

The supporter in Manuel Neuer is excited for this week’s Champions League match. He is looking forward to visiting another new city and playing in a new stadium. On Tuesday Bayern München play in the Champions League against AS Roma (20:45 CEST); a game which Neuer cannot wait for: “I’m really excited to make the trip, as I’m yet to play in the Stadio Olimpico.”

Playing in a new stadium is all well and good, but Neuer is aware that picking up the points is the main priority of the trip. In Saturday’s 6-0 victory over Werder Bremen, he didn’t have to make a save but is expecting a busier night in Italy: “I think I’ll be a lot busier,” he said. “Roma are a good team, so we will need to be at our best defensively. It will be a different game to the one we had at the weekend. It’s not going to be easy, but I have faith in the team to do what is needed.” All roads lead to Rome according to the saying, but Bayern are travelling to the game via the sky. On Monday afternoon they fly to Italy in the hope of picking up three points. With a victory, Pep Guardiola’s side would be all but guaranteed a place in the last sixteen. Bayern have won both games despite only scoring twice. They lead Group E with six points, ahead of Roma (4), Manchester City (1) and CSKA Moscow (0).

Lahm: "We’ve made a promising start"

Philipp Lahm is pleased with Bayern’s start to the campaign: “We’ve made a good start; we don’t want to slip up in Rome.” Roma are in good form and may pose problems for the German Champions. They have won all but one Serie A fixture so far this season (a defeat against Juventus). Bayern go into the game as favourites against Rudi Garcia’s side but are wary of the opposition: “It’s going to be a difficult game for us and a tough trip,” explained Lahm. “It’s going to be a nice challenge for us,” said Arjen Robben. “We want to progress in the competition and make steps forward in the competition.” It will be nice for Neuer to visit a new stadium, but it’s all about the three points.
