Neuer: "We knew this day would come"

Neuer: We obviously hope that it was just a one-time thing. The game reminded me of our encounter with Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final, when we conceded an early goal and then appeared to lose our focus as Real went on to score more goals. We lack a certain quality to stay calm in those situations, just like in Barcelona last season. Back then and today in Gladbach, the goals were scored in quick succession and we have to learn from that.

Question: Sporting director Matthias Sammer said, that the result is also a lesson for the public and the journalists, as FC Bayern are not unstoppable and their victories should not be taken for granted. Is this 3-1 defeat also a lesson for yourself and the team?

Neuer: Yes, we know what this means. We never said that we would overrun every team in the league and suffer no defeats. We knew this day would come eventually. We managed a great run until now.

Question: Final Question: One positive aspect for FC Bayern from this game was the return of Franck Ribery, who scored Bayern's only goal six minutes after he was brought on. Were you happy for him?

Neuer: Of course. We had all already seen his enthusiasm to be back in training and he displays a lot of joy when he is on the pitch. We are very happy to have him back with us.

FC Bayern München suffered their first Bundesliga defeat on matchday 15, losing 3-1 to Borussia Mönchengladbach. After the game, Manuel Neuer spoke with the media on the loss, the consequences and the return of Franck Ribery.

Question: Mr. Neuer, this was your first Bundesliga defeat of the season. Was it a deserved loss?

Manuel Neuer: It was definitely a disappointing game for us, but we will get back onto our feet.

Question: You conceded three goals within 14 minutes during the second half. That must've been unusual for you, right?

Neuer: Yes, it definitely was. We can concede goals now and then and we can certainly concede a goal in Gladbach, because they have a very strong team – but we can't allow ourselves to fall apart like that in such a short space of time. We have to stay calm in those situations and avoid further setbacks. We still had enough time to turn the game around or at least get the equaliser.

Question: Bayern had more of the game in the first half, but failed to take advantage of their clear chances to score the opener. Did you start to lose patience?

Neuer: No, the team remained quite calm at all times. Obviously we are upset about having missed those chances, but we know that life goes on. Sometimes you just don't have luck on your side. In the second half we failed to create similarly good chances and Gladbach took advantage of their period of pressure to score three goals.

Question: This was FC Bayern's first defeat in the first half of the season under Pep Guardiola. Was this just a one-off mishap?

Neuer: We obviously hope that it was just a one-time thing. The game reminded me of our encounter with Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final, when we conceded an early goal and then appeared to lose our focus as Real went on to score more goals.
