Neid and Hrubesch to announce Olympics squads on Thursday

There are barely three weeks to go until the start of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (3rd to 20th August). Silvia Neid’s DFB women’s team and Horst Hrubesch’s Olympic team will be taking part in the tournament for the first time. The coaches will announce their squads this coming Thursday (14th July).

The women’s national team is currently in the middle of their third preparatory training camp. The provisional squad of 26 players will be reduced to 18 during the camp in Bad Gögging. Silvia Neid will be able to put four of the non-selected players on standby for the tournament, so she will have 22 players overall for the final training camp in Bad Lippspringe. The team will play their final friendly ahead of the tournament against Ghana in Paderborn on 22nd July (18:00 CEST).

Women begin tournament on 3rd August, men on the 4th

The team will meet up on 27th July in Frankfurt before heading directly to São Paulo on 29th. The Brazilian metropolis where the opening match of the 2014 World Cup was played will also be the setting for the DFB women’s team’s opening match against Zimbabwe on 3rd August (23:00 CEST). They will then face Australia on 6th August (23:00 CEST) before travelling to the capital Brasilia to play Canada on 9th August (21:00 CEST). The final of the competition will be played in Rio’s Maracanã stadium on 19th August.

Horst Hrubesch‘s 18-man Olympics squad will consist of current and former U21 youth players, who qualified for the Olympic Games by reaching the semi-finals of the European U21 Championship last year. All players who were born after 1st January 1993 are eligible to play in the tournament. Each team is also allowed up to three older players. The Germany men’s Olympic team will meet at the DOSB in Hannover to get kitted out and complete photo shoots on 25th July, before coming together again in Frankfurt on 28th July for three days of training.

The team will depart for Salvador on 30th July and will play their first Group C match there in the Fonte Nova Arena against Mexico, the 2012 Gold medalists, on 4th August (22:00 CEST). Their second group game will also take place in Salvador on 7th August (21:00 CEST), when Horst Hrubesch’s team play South Korea. Germany’s third and final group fixture will be against Fiji in Belo Horizonte on 10th August (21:00 CEST). The quarterfinals and semi-finals are scheduled for the 13th and 17th August, with the final set to take place in the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro on 20th August.
