Müller: “Squeeze out all that’s left in the tank against BVB”

Following FC Bayern’s Champions League exit against Real Madrid on Tuesday, the table-toppers were held to a 2-2 draw at home by FSV Mainz 05 on matchday 30. Now, they are set for a prestigious match-up with Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday’s DFB Cup semi-final. World Champion Thomas Müller spoke with DFB.de on the game against Mainz and the upcoming encounter with archrivals BVB.

Question: Mr. Müller, why were Bayern unable to get a win against Mainz?

Thomas Müller: We didn’t have a good start to the game and immediately gave a goal away. There were quite a few reasons.

Question: For example?

Müller: Of course, Tuesday’s game was still in our minds, although we should have been able to forget about it, we are professionals after all. However, we are also just humans. It’s difficult mentally to digest such a disappointment.

Question: Why did the team only seem to find its focus in the second half?

Müller: We had to play catch-up in the second half after what happened in the first 45 minutes. We invested a lot after the break, but needed a bit more luck to turn the game fully around. Therefore, we are not satisfied today.

Question: What will you have to focus on now, as the season is coming to an end?

Müller: We have to look ahead; on Wednesday we have a very important game. Getting to the final in Berlin is our big goal apart from winning the league title. We have our sights set on that.

Question: Is the game with Dortmund perhaps coming at the wrong time?

Müller: It’s a good thing that we are playing again quickly. Even if the team is somewhat handicapped physically and through injuries, but the schedule is set. We now have to pull through, chin up, chest out and show up on Wednesday.

Question: How will you manage to squeeze out everything on Wednesday, despite your tank being nearly empty already?

Müller: We are playing against Dortmund at home in a Cup semi-final – you have to squeeze out everything you have left in the tank. We are looking forward to the game, it’s a real highlight. It’s not easy to stand here right now but I think we will manage to keep our heads raised. Our manager is the right man to build up our confidence again. We can definitely look to follow up on our second half performance against Mainz.
