Müller: “I want be known as a goalscorer”

For Thomas Müller, there are no signs that an up and down first half to the season is affecting him. “I definitely wasn’t walking around hanging my head on holiday,” said the World Champion. “My confidence is still high.”

The 27-year-old forward, who has so far scored one goal in his 13 Bundesliga appearances this season, was left out of the final Bundesliga game before Christmas by head coach Carlo Ancelotti. Bayern went on to win 3-0 against title challengers RB Leipzig. “There was more space in that game than in our previous league matches. It was a game in which I could have made an impact,” explained Müller. “Obviously, I wasn’t exactly enjoying being on the bench.”

”I’m somewhere between a midfielder and a striker”

With one eye on the second half of the season, which begins on the 20th January against SC Freiburg, Müller used the winter break to reflect on areas of improvement. “I asked myself a few questions. For example, where can I go that extra mile in training?” For Müller this involves areas of his game such as “strength, speed and technique.”

However, the Germany international doesn’t want to be labelled as an out-and-out striker. “I’m somewhere between being a midfielder and a striker,” according to Müller. “I would actually prefer it if I could soon get my label back a goalscorer.” In a Germany shirt, at least, Müller is well on his way to justifying that label, having already scored four goal in the national side’s World Cup qualifying campaign.”
